Time After Time
What’s that mysterious ticking noise? Tick. Tick. Tick. It’s kind of…not catchy. Potter Puppet Pals, listen up, the not so mysterious Doomsday Clock just ticked over to 2.5 minutes to midnight.
What the heck does that mean? Well the Doomsday Clock was devised by nuclear scientists to help the world understand the global threat of nuclear weapons. Dependent on the ebb and flow of current affairs, the clock was at its closest during the first tests of the hydrogen bomb during the Cold War moved the clock to 2 minutes to midnight. It was at its furthest away from midnight at 17 minutes in 1991 when the Russia and the US were decreasing their weapons arsenal and the Cold War had ended. What happens at midnight? Humanity's destruction either from nuclear, biological, man-made, or natural disasters.
Just yesterday the clocked ticked a touch closer to midnight, the second closest it’s ever been in fact. Because of the rise of nationalism in the western world, Donald Trump’s comments about nuclear weapons, a potential of an arms race between the US and Russia, and the denial of the universal scientific consensus on climate change, these scientists believe we have just inched a bit closer to our demise.
Well, what do these nuclear scientists know? A lot, actually. All are experts in their field, highly regarded, and definitely successful. They absolutely know what they are doing. That’s the beauty of science, there is usually no grey area and in theory, it's much more difficult to politicize when you are dealing with data and not alternative facts.
Anyhow, what should we do? Well other than calling congresspeople, the best thing you can do is reduce your contribution to climate change by using less electricity, taking public transportation, and buying meat and produce from local sources.
